Say Konnichiwa to Monkey 47 distiller’s cut 2020

Article 24/09/2020

Monkey 47 is used to shaking things up and for its 10th annual limited-edition it is doing just that by resting its treasured Gin in the Holy Grail of ageing barrels, Mizunara

Monkey 47 is proud to present its 2020 Distiller’s Cut: a very special Monkey 47 that was aged for six months in Mizunara Barrels. The annual limited edition, historically driven by botanical curiosity and the hunt for unique aromas, coincides with the brand’s 10th anniversary and is the result of a two-year campaign to acquire the Holy Grail of ageing barrels.

Gin? Mizunara Barrels? It’s actually quite easy to explain. On his many travels, Monkey 47’s founder, Alexander Stein encountered the Japanese art of distilling, which includes the use of a unique type of oak in whisky ageing barrels. He was immediately intrigued by the history and tradition in which these barrels are steeped and set out on a mission to obtain some Mizunara barrels of his own. The result is Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut 2020, a soft, elegant dry gin with a refined top note of sandalwood and a touch of coconut, which combine to offer a supple sensory experience that’s not just for fans of a delicate vanilla bouquet.

Staying true to the brand’s sophisticated look, which reflects the relentless pursuit of quality and rich heritage, the label has been designed using Japan as its muse. Blue in colour, it takes inspiration from two different sources – the wood the gin was aged in, Japanese Blue Oak, and the famous hues of Japanese Blue Gold.

Louise Ryan, Managing Director for The Gin Hub, comments: “Monkey 47 is well versed in crafting a one-of-a-kind limited edition and this one is sure to set the hearts of bartenders and gin enthusiasts

racing. The team at the Black Forest Distillery have once again pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in distilling botanicals and practising the fine art of barrel ageing.”

To drive awareness of the launch amongst consumers, customers and the hospitality industry, Monkey 47 is setting off on a Wunderbar Adventure of Sophistication in the infamous 86 Fleetwood Bounder made famous by one of the most popular TV series of all time. The Bounder will visit some of Western Europe’s most tantalising cities, whilst selling 47 bottles of 2020 Distiller’s Cut at each destination.  The Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut 2020 Bounder Tour will travel to: Stuttgart, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne and Frankfurt.

Monkey 47 has also collaborated with Asia’s number one bar, Jigger & Pony[1], to create a stand-out signature serve with the new Distiller’s Cut 2020. The Tree Does Not Grow Straight was inspired by Mizunara oak:

  • 10ml Cocchi Americano
  • 5ml Crème de Cassis
  • 3 Dashes Peychauds Bitters
  • Serve with ice cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with lemon zest.
