Know-how

Every Chivas whisky boasts its own unique formula, and thus its own distinct character and taste. Yet they all have one thing in common: the art of blending, as pioneered by the Chivas brothers in 1850 and handed down to master blenders over generations since.
The new spirit must be matured for three years to qualify as “Scotch”. Chivas whiskies are aged for at least 12 years. The master blender selects the best malt and grain whiskies to give each Scotch whisky the distinct Chivas flavour and taste experience over time. Colin Scott explains, “The art of the master blender in understanding the many different flavours in Scotch whisky is like the work of a composer: not only do you need to completely understand the musical characteristics of every instrument, but you must also understand how to combine them to build an unforgettable, spellbinding symphony.”

Chivas traces its roots to the heart of Scotland, where brothers James and John Chivas took over an Aberdeen gourmet grocery store renowned for its stock of aged whiskies. During the 1830s, the Chivas brothers began to combine grain and malt whiskies to create a smoother, more balanced taste. Such was their talent they were granted a Royal Warrant to supply the Queen Victoria in 1843.

The art of blending, pioneered by the Chivas brothers, was legalised and made official under the 1860 Spirits Act. Initiated by Chivas, whose whiskies are reputed for their sweet, rich and smooth flavour, this heralded the dawn of a new era for fine blended Scotch whiskies.

In 1909, the Chivas brothers made blending history by creating the world’s first luxury Scotch, Chivas Regal, a 25-year-old blend destined for the Manhattan elite.

Today, master blender Colin Scott, whose career at Chivas Brothers spans more 30 years, is the custodian of the signature Chivas Regal style, ensuring a whisky that is consistent in taste and flavour year after year.
