SDG #15 : Pernod Ricard New Zealand has taken extensive initiatives to provide a safe haven for sheep and endangered falcons

Article 25/01/2017

Our mission: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

PRNZ Falcon

The New Zealand falcon (Karearea) is rarer than a kiwi and is New Zealand's most endangered bird of prey.  These natural predators are an excellent resource in the vineyard, deterring other birds from damaging grape crops.

Since 2010, Brancott Estate has supported the Marlborough Falcon Trust's efforts to restore that Karearea population in Marlborough by donating $1 from the sale of every bottle of Brancott Estate Living Land, our organic wine range.  By 2015, over $500,000 had been donated $300,000 to the Trust.

In addition to providing financial support, Brancott Estate has also provided the Marlborough Falcon Trust with land on our vineyard to house a conservation and breeding aviary

In December 2013, two female chicks were released in Marlborough, the first release of aviary-bred birds by Marlborough Falcon Trust.  In 2014, we worked with the Trust to give people the opportunity to see the falcons up-close and in flight with their flying demonstrations.  Now visitors can walk an informative nature trail to the on-site aviary, view the falcons and watch a flying display over the private 'Forgotton Valley' Pinot Noir vineyard.

In New Zealand, sheep are used instead of chemical or mechanical weeding, thus reducing the use of pesticides, and allowing the removal of weeds as well as better stripping of excess leaves;

About Malborough Falcon Trust

The Marlborough Falcon Trust was established in 2008 with an aim of increasing the numbers of New Zealand falcons in the Marlborough region while educating the public on the special qualities of this country's only endemic bird of prey.

The Marlborough Falcon Trust is run by volunteers and funded through sponsorship, grants, donations and services in kind and Brancott Estate has supported the Marlborough Falcon Trust since 2010.
