The Pernod best practices guide (France)

Pernod, a French subsidiary, intends to reduce water consumption through concrete and measurable initiatives. The distribution of a best practice guide has made it possible to involve all of the subsidiary’s sites and obtain significant results.

A global effort

Within the framework of Pernod’s Quality, Safety and Environment (QSE) approach, resource conservation and environmental protection is a core concern. In December 2008, the subsidiary launched a best practice guide aiming to make teams more aware of water and energy consumption and change each individual’s practices.

Distributed to employees at every site, the guide helps stimulate environmental innovation in situ.

Multiple initiatives, conclusive results

A series of initiatives was undertaken at all of the subsidiary’s sites, which involved:
  • systematic metre readings, at least 2 times a week, followed by an investigation and inquiry if maximum values are exceeded
  • installing spray guns on hose ends,
  • using submetres to identify the areas of highest consumption,
  • optimising rinsing times (basins, cleaning, etc.),
  • replacing softeners (volume necessary for minimum regeneration and less frequent regeneration),
  • identifying leaks,
  • introducing cleaning trolleys for more efficient cleaning (multidirectional) of external basins and large containers.
These initiatives quickly met with success. From July 2008 to August 2009, water consumption at all Pernod sites decreased by 22%.
