Pernod Ricard implements actions intended to control better the sale of alcoholic beverages and initiates prevention programmes for young people. The Group also encourages efforts to reinforce parental responsibility for communicating about alcohol with their children. Parents play a critical role in shaping their children’s behaviour.
A responsibility highlighted by IREB
Since 1971, the Group has actively participated in the work of the French Institut de recherches scientifiques sur les boissons (IREB), a research organisation and a source of information and documentation on alcohol. IREB publishes detailed statistical information on alcohol consumption in France.Presented in November 2009, one of IREB’s latest studies* helped to shed light on the formative influence of parental attitudes on the drinking habits of minors. The more a child feels permitted to drink, the more he or she risks developing an alcohol dependency. The more his or her circle of family and friends develops an active dialogue while establishing boundaries, the more likely he or she will be to adopt a similarly responsible attitude.
"Les jeunes et l’alcool aujourd’hui" fifth IREB study, under the specific direction of Marie Choquet, INSERM Research Director at IRDES and member of the IREB Scientific Committee, November 2009.

Assisting and supporting parents
Conscious of these stakes, Pernod Ricard has committed to developing awareness campaigns for adults who are responsible for raising young children. How can one discuss the dangers of alcohol with one’s child? What are the risks of alcohol abuse and dependency? How can one respond to repeated cases of excessive alcohol consumption? The French-language website Infos Alcool Parents was launched at the end of 2009 by Entreprise et Prévention, a French association to which the Group belongs. With this resource, parents now have access to detailed information about the risks related to alcohol consumption, as well as advice for easily discussing the issue with their children.
