Reducing the impact of waste and packaging

A signatory of the UN Global Compact since 2003, Pernod Ricard seeks to limit waste and take measures that are more environmentally friendly. In 2008, the Group set the goal of recycling 85% of its waste by 2012.

Towards ecodesign

Pernod Ricard encourages its subsidiaries to practice the principle of ecodesign for packaging, making it possible to reduce its weight and recycle it more easily. The ecodesign method is effective on an environmental and economic level, and meets marketing and commercial demands.

The ecodesign programme continues today with the goals of:
  • decreasing the environmental impact of glass containers,
  • working towards the production of recyclable packaging,
  • systematically separating waste for recycling.
Furthermore, ecodesign training is given to teams in relevant fields, notably Purchasing and Marketing. The implementation of a "Closer to the Client" indicator within the Ricard Purchasing department for example made it possible to optimise packaging supplies according to real needs.

Ecodesign becomes a Group standard
In 2008-2009, the programme for introducing ecodesign continued. Several projects for new products that are more environmentally friendly were thus developed.

Using wastes and by-products

For several years, the Group has ensured that by-products generated by its activities are transformed and used for animal feed or agriculture.
Through the process of methanogenesis, liquid effluents can also be used to produce biogas, a renewable source of energy.

This results in more than 99% of our organic by-products being used.
