Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of activities

Pernod Ricard is committed to reducing the emission of greenhouse gas and other pollutant gases linked to its activities. The goal is to reduce the Group’s contribution to climate change.

Favouring energy-efficient solutions

Group subsidiaries are undertaking several initiatives to emit less greenhouse gas during production. One important aspect of this effort is improving the Group’s energy efficiency.
This often comes through simple solutions that are easy to set up. In this way, for example, natural light is used to replace electric lighting in the warehouses at Casa Pedro Domecq (Mexico).
Furthermore, the Spanish Ruavieja factory installed a new roof allowing for natural lighting. This initiative reduces electricity consumption by 30%.

At the same time, the Group is undertaking a specific project to reduce the CO2 emissions generated by information systems. The Group is committed to promoting "Green IT" best practices, which include:
  • using stand-by modes,
  • reducing electricity consumed by computer centres,
  • increasing videoconference meetings, etc.

Evaluating our carbon footprint

To further understand its impact on climate, the Group is gradually extending the evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions to all geographic zones and activities. A carbon footprint evaluation model was developed for implementation at all Group production sites.

Carbon footprint: the lessons to learn
A study was performed to evaluate the production carbon footprint of  Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay wine and Chivas Regal Scotch whisky subsidiaries. The results allow the Group to prioritise each step in the life cycle of a product according to its carbon impact. The study helped to highlight the important role of packaging and, to a lesser degree, distillation, transport and agriculture.
