Water is an essential component in products made by Pernod Ricard. Conscious of the increasing scarcity of this blue gold, the Group has made water management one of the 5 strategic drivers of its environmental policy.
Water consumption: precise and concrete goals
In 2008, Pernod Ricard set a goal of reducing its level of water consumption per unit produced by 10% before 2012. The subsidiaries are working to reach this goal by:- measuring their consumption,
- making sure their abstraction does not endanger water resources,
- undertaking concrete projects to reduce consumption.
Pernod involves each site and employee
The Group subsidiary established a best practice guide intended for its industrial and administrative sites in France. The document expresses the subsidiary’s intention to reduce its water consumption. This effort has already helped reduce consumption by 24%.

Wastewater treatment: efficient initiatives
Several initiatives have been undertaken in this field, such as:
- the distribution of a guide including water techniques that are best adapted to the Group’s activities,
- composting sludge from effluent treatment stations,
- using this sludge as an agricultural fertiliser.
A production site in Rajasthan recycles treated wastewater and reduces its water consumption by 30%
At its Behror production site in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the local Pernod Ricard subsidiary implemented an ambitious and efficient approach to rationalise its water consumption. Its policy includes the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. Having already reached a recycling level of 45% of its water consumption, the Behror site is now working to reach 50% for 2010 and 2011.
